EDITORIAL PHOTOGRAPHY: CARE
Years ago I used to send the CARE organization small checks, $25 here $50 there, and in return I got a flood of mail to which my first reaction was usually, “That’s the worst photography I’ve ever seen. Somebody should help these people.” One day the lightbulb over my head sputtered to life and it occurred to me that I was a photographer and I could help them. The result has been the most moving and profound experience of both my personal and professional life.
Traveling to the remotest and poorest corners of the Earth, seeing the strength and dignity of peoples who overcome challenges that few of us can imagine from devastating drought to the terror of land mines. I hope that strength shines through some of these images, I hope some of you will be moved as I was to take up a cause. As overwhelming as it may seem, step by step it is possible to make the world a better place, to ease injustice, to give someone the means to succeed.
