These photographs are the product of my work over the last 18 months on Johns Island in the San Juan Archipelago of Washington State. This rugged and windswept rock, where life struggles to find a foothold in the poor soils left by the glaciers passing, is a riot of color and beauty in the brief spring. Of particular interest to me are the grasses, so humble as to escape notice elsewhere, here they glory in variety and abundance. A subtle path winds its way around the island leaving faint trace of the passage. Wildflowers take amazing form. From the lichens to the Douglas Fir everything alive here shows an astonishing tenacity even in frailty. That endurance, that whisper of meaning and beauty, the impossible creativity of life, that is what I hope to share. Somewhere between the excesses of romanticism and the dispassionate eye of science lies my sense of wonder.
